Yahweh Shalom: The Lord is Peace


As we continue to deepen our relationship with God, it is imperative that we truly know who He is. We know that He is our everything, Yes, but I would like to invite you to go on a little journey with me. The goal is to end this exploration with a better understanding and knowledge of who God is, through the study of some of the names of God.

It is my continued endeavor to grow in my faith in God and who He is, day by day. It is in the simple knowledge of who God is that my trust in Him will increase.

Today I would like us to journey alongside with Yahweh Shalom, The Lord is Peace.


Our God, the one and true living God, is Yahweh Shalom, The Lord is Peace. He is the source of all peace. When we find peace in Him, we find wholeness in this broken world. We find the true connection that provides peace that trickles down into all areas of our lives.

The peace we receive from Yahweh Shalom, is like that of an electricity source. No matter what we try to do, if we turn on a lamp, and light does not shine through it, we cannot produce that light on our own. We cannot produce that light without being connected to the main power source of energy. We can change the bulb. We can plug and unplug it or even move it to another outlet. But unless our local connection is connected to the source, that light will never shine. Our entire home will be in darkness and without the energy that it needs to properly function.

So it is with the peace that we seek. We can try to find it without being connected to Yahweh Shalom, The Lord is Peace, but it will never shine through our entire lives. We will find ourselves in dark places trying to find peace in the things of this world. We will never have the peace that Yahweh Shalom, the Lord is Peace, provides. Amazingly, there is a remedy to this problem.

Get connected to the source of all peace!

As long as we stay connected to Him, we will be complete in God. We will find safety and rest for our weary souls.

Let’s take a look at the Israelites. They seem to constantly find themselves in some type of distress. Their disobedience and rebellion towards God, even after all that He has done for them time and time again, lands them in some very hard places. The peace that they have full access to escapes them because they refuse to stay connected to the source.

In Judges the 6th chapter, we find the Israelites in great crisis at the hands of the Midianites. The Israelites had done evil in the Lord’s sight; so He handed them over to the Midianites for seven years.

2 The Midianites were so cruel that the Israelites made hiding places for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds. 3 Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, marauders from Midian, Amalek, and the people of the east would attack Israel, 4 camping in the land and destroying crops as far away as Gaza. They left the Israelites with nothing to eat, taking all the sheep, goats, cattle, and donkeys. 5 These enemy hordes, coming with their livestock and tents, were as thick as locusts; they arrived on droves of camels too numerous to count. And they stayed until the land was stripped bare. 6 So Israel was reduced to starvation by the Midianites. Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord for help.


The Israelites had finally had enough and they remembered where their source of peace could be found. They cried out to Yahweh Shalom, The Lord is Peace, for help.

7 When they cried out to the Lord because of Midian, 8 the Lord sent a prophet to the Israelites. He said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of slavery in Egypt. 9 I rescued you from the Egyptians and from all who oppressed you. I drove out your enemies and gave you their land. 10 I told you, ‘I am the Lord your God. You must not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you now live.’ But you have not listened to me.”


It’s hard being reminded of our detours from God’s path. However, it is important that we identify and recognize where we strayed; where we went wrong and by doing so, we can ask for God’s help back from those places of distress, agitation, and sometimes all out war. Then we are able to do the things necessary to never walk that route again.

Sometimes God needs to remind us where our faith in Him was lacking and when we made that misstep that goes against His desired will. When we can sit still and listen to the voice of God and receive the necessary discipline that He provides, for those He loves, then we are able to allow Yahweh Shalom, the Lord is Peace, to reenter our lives and still the chaotic disruptions and bring calm and restfulness.

11 Then the angel of the Lord came and sat beneath the great tree at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash of the clan of Abiezer. Gideon son of Joash was threshing wheat at the bottom of a winepress to hide the grain from the Midianites. 12 The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!”

Yahweh Shalom, The Lord is Peace wants to speak into our lives, just as He did in the life of Gideon. The angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon in the midst of what was probably a routine day for him and told him who He was, because of who God says he is.

“Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!”

God is saying to you,

“Mighty hero, I am with you! I bring you the peace that your weary heart is in need of. With me, you can do all things because I will provide you with strength. Hear me my son. Hear me my daughter. Accept the peace that I, Yahweh Shalom, seek to give to you.”

Will you hear Him? Will you receive the peace that He alone can bring? Will you allow Him to speak life into your seemingly routine day?

“Sir,” Gideon replied, “if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn’t they say, ‘The Lord brought us up out of Egypt’? But now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites.”


Does any of this sound familiar to you? “God, where are You? Your Word says that You are faithful. Your Word says that the joy of the Lord, it is my strength. Your Word says that You will never leave me nor forsake me, yet I am struggling day in and day out. Where are all the miracles that I’ve read about in Your Word?”

Sometimes we do tend to wonder where Yahweh Shalom, The Lord is Peace, is. But, guess what? He has been there all the time. No matter what we are having to endure, if we continue (the key word in this sentence is CONTINUE) to cry out to Him for help, we will begin to feel that peace enveloping our life. Day by day, things will begin to calm down.

We have to keep going through the process. We cannot give up. We must believe!

14 Then the Lord turned to him and said, “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!” 15 “But Lord,” Gideon replied, “how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least in my entire family!” 16 The Lord said to him, “I will be with you. And you will destroy the Midianites as if you were fighting against one man.” 17 Gideon replied, “If you are truly going to help me, show me a sign to prove that it is really the Lord speaking to me.

Gideon knew that on his own, utilizing his own strength, he could not rescue anyone. His clan was the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh and he was the least within his entire family.

Have you ever felt that way? Out of all the people that God could have chosen for a specific assignment, He chose you. He chose me. I know that I have felt inferior and lacking, and that brought doubt in my ability to accomplish what God has for me to do. But I must remember that God sees me through the lens of His righteousness. He doesn’t see a broken and unworthy or incapable person. He sees someone who, with the peace of Yahweh Shalom, and His mighty hand working through me, He can use for His glory.

God saw this in Gideon even when Gideon did not see this in himself. The Lord said that He would be with Gideon. He guaranteed the destruction of the Midianites. God would reduce them down and make it appear that Gideon was only fighting against one man.

Wow! God does this for us in our lives. That circumstance that seems so overwhelming that we face, believing that there is no way out or through, God can minimize the power that the situation has over our lives and bring forth victory in the battle that we face.

Gideon requested a sign to prove that it was surely the Lord speaking to Him.

“God is that really you?” Boy, have I asked Him that before. We want to know before we take a step, “God are you with me?”

In verses 18-21 of Judges 6, the Angel of the Lord performed miracles that proved to Gideon He was who He said He was.

The Lord proves Himself to us each and every day. With every breath that we take, He is with us. His Word emphatically tells us that He will never leave us nor forsake us. We can trust Him in our storms and know that when we call upon Him, Yahweh Shalom will provide us with the peace that we so desperately need, in order for us to take the next step forward.

Once Gideon realized that it was the Angel of the Lord, he cried out to Him out of fear. He questioned the Lord and when the Lord showed Him who He really was, Gideon became afraid. However, the Lord replied, “Do not be afraid. You will not die.” It was alright for Gideon to recognize the power of the God that called him to take a leap of great faith.

We, too, need to recognize the power that God gives us to complete the tasks that He assigns to our hands. God would not use us if He did not believe that we could accomplish it with His strength and power backing us up. Yahweh Shalom, The Lord is Peace, will provide the peace that we need so that we can move forward in our lives, doing the will of the ONE who sends us.

22 When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the Lord, he cried out, “Oh, Sovereign Lord, I’m doomed! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!” 23 “It is all right,” the Lord replied. “Do not be afraid. You will not die.” 24 And Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and named it Yahweh-Shalom (which means “the Lord is peace”). The altar remains in Ophrah in the land of the clan of Abiezer to this day.

JUDGES 6:22-24 NLT

Let us allow Yahweh Shalom, The Lord is Peace, to do what is in His authority to do. If you let Him, He will give you peace beyond your understanding to handle all that you face.

Thank You Yahweh Shalom for Your peace.


Yahweh Shalom, The Lord is Peace, just this very day I needed your presence in my situation. Thank You for reminding me that when I call out to You, that You will bring peace into a raging sea and will bring calm to the storms in my life. Your peace, Yahweh Shalom, is like no other. You are the source of peace for all people, the root to which we may attach our life and know that we will receive all that we need for sustenance and growth in You.

Life brings so many fast moving changes and at times our heart becomes overwhelmed. But in You, and with You, The Lord is Peace, we have all that we need to guide us safely through. Help us to cry out to You and to seek Your peace rather than try to figure things out on our own. We give You permission, Yahweh Shalom, to enter all of the broken places within our souls and to cover us with Your peace that will work within us to rebuild what Satan has tried to destroy. We love You and we praise You for being who You are.

And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.
